![]() Our goal is to provide you with a usable edge for cutting practice that will hold up to some use and not require constant re-sharpening. The resulting edge will be “sword sharp” not razor sharp. Our sword sharpening expert has personally sharpened several thousand swords at this point, so will provide you with a professional service. We can sharpen only the last half or third of an edge, for example. If you have a different preference, feel free to make that request in the special instructions at check out. By default we will sharpen as much of the blade as possible including any false edges if appropriate. The blades are rested between passes to prevent them from becoming hot and damaging their temper. The process involves many passes with sanding belts of various grits. The sharpening service is done with a belt sander. We adjust the angle of the edge to suit the specific blade and attempt to get as close to a bevel-less edge as possible without marring the surface of the blade. Some blades will take and hold sharper edges than others and the thickness of the blade will determine how wide the bevel will need to be. The resulting edge is somewhat dependent on the particular blade. The result is typically “very sharp” with a small secondary bevel and a bit of an “apple seed” profile. Our sharpening service will provide a good serviceable edge on the blade. We can no longer weed out the “blemished” items from this product as the majority of them come this way. Please Note: Although these items are brand new & coming from Cold Steel some of the sayas /scabbards may suffer from minor scuffs & scrapes. The sageo is knotted brown cord and the sword comes with a embroidered sword bag. The tip is capped with an iron fitting with a detailed crane in a style to match the hilt fittings. The saya scabbard is carved from wood and given a glossy, black lacquered coat for a finish. A brown ito grip wrap with a pair of brass menuki fitted beneath the ito folds completes the katana. ![]() ![]() The wooden tsuka grip has been channeled and fitted with panels of genuine rayskin. The tsuba, as well as the fuchi collar and kashira pommel cap, are all crafted from iron and embellished with 24 karat gold leaf detailing. The blade spine is solid and has omitted a bo-hi groove in order to retain the extra blade mass to aid in powering it through hard-hitting strikes and decisive cuts. The blade of Cold Steels Mizutori Katana is forged from 1095 high carbon steel and has been differentially clay-tempered to endow the blade with a hardened cutting edge coupled with a shock-absorbing body and spine. Thus it is a fitting motif for the katana of a traditional and honorable samurai warrior. A symbol for longevity, aged wisdom and loyalty, the crane is traditionally believed to live for a thousand years in Japan and is held above other birds in its reverence and honorable dignity.
